Short Term Disability insurance

As an employer in the Netherlands, it is compulsory to continue paying an employee for  two years in case of disability because of illness. This is a big financial risk for you as an employer, but luckily you can insure yourself for this.  

 

WGA-gap insurance

After the Short Term Disability period the employee will be assessed for Long Term Disability by the Dutch government. In case of partial disability (WGA), the employee is obligated to earn sufficient income for the part he/she is able to work to be eligible for the state top-up benefit. If unable to find (sufficient) work the state benefit will reduce significantly. As an employer you can insure this income “gap” by taking out a WGA-gap insurance.

 

WIA excess insurance

The state disability benefit and WGA-gap insurance provide income protection up the social security maximum. Especially for high-earners securing income protection for the salary part above the social security maximum a WIA-excess insurance is a must.

 

Accident insurance
An accident insurance insures a one-time, lump-sum payment in case of death or permanent disability due to an accident. Usually the accident insurance insures your employees 24 hours-a-day which means that the coverage is applicable during and outside of work. An accident insurance is a low-cost insurance, but important insurance to offer as this payment could be used for funeral costs or adjustments that need to be made to car or house.

 

Occupational Health Services

As an employer you are obligated to have this service arranged. This service helps guide you through the complex legislative requirements during the first 2 years of illness of an employee. Next to providing access to the company doctor, the service helps you and the sick employee to minimize the duration of the sick-leave, look into reintegration in or outside of the company and keep your files in order before presenting this to the Dutch government for assessment.

 

Opting out for the Sickness Benefits Act (WGA)
As a self-insurer you bear the risk for your sick ill and / or incapacitated employees. By becoming an own-risk bearer for the Sickness Benefits Act and the WGA, you are abele to influence a part of the social security costs.
